Increasing CO2 Storage in Oil Recovery

چکیده

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection has been used as a commercial process for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) since the 1970’s. Because the cost of oil recovered is closely linked to the purchase cost of the CO2 injected, considerable reservoir engineering design effort has gone into reducing the total amount of CO2 required to recover each barrel of oil. If, on the other hand, the objective of the CO2 injection is to increase the amount of CO2 left behind at the end of the recovery process, the approach to the design questions changes. In this paper, we consider how CO2 utilization might be increased.

Well Blowout Rates and Consequences in California Oil and Gas District 4 from 1991 to 2005: Implications for Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide

Well blowout rates in oil fields undergoing thermally enhanced recovery (via steam injection) in California Oil and Gas District 4 from 1991 to 2005 were on the order of 1 per 1,000 well construction operations, 1 per 10,000 active wells per year, and 1 per 100,000 shutin/idle and plugged/abandoned wells per year. This allows some initial inferences about leakage of CO2 via wells, which is cons...

CO2 EOR and Storage in Oil Reservoirs

CO2 EOR and Storage in Oil Reservoirs — CO2 injection into tertiary oil reservoirs has been widely accepted as an effective technique for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and has been used by the oil industry for over 40 years. Concerns over greenhouse gas emissions are leading to the investigation and realisation of its potential as a carbon storage method in recent years. With the right reservoir...

RESEARCH ON CO2 FLOODING FOR IMPROVED OIL RECOVERY IN WATER FLOODING ABANDONED RESERVOIRS

CO2 injection is an effective technique for improved oil recovery in light oil reservoirs, especially for water flooding abandoned reservoirs. In this study, the lower part of Es1 reservoirs in Pucheng oilfield was introduced as the target reservoir. By studying the minimum miscible pressure in CO2 flooding, the reservoir could achieve miscible flooding. Long core displacement experiments prove...

Joint Inversion of Fracture Model Properties for CO2 Storage Monitoring or Oil Recovery History Matching

Joint Inversion of Fracture Model Properties for CO2 Storage Monitoring or Oil Recovery History Matching — For oil recovery or CO2 storage, “reservoirs” are commonly used to designate geological structures where oil can be found or CO2 can be stored. All reservoirs present a heterogeneity in terms of rock type and properties (such as porosity and permeability). In addition, some of these reserv...

The Economics of CO2 Transport by Pipeline and Storage in Saline Aquifers and Oil Reservoirs

Large reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change. One method of achieving such reductions is CO2 capture and storage (CCS). CCS requires the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) at a large industrial facility, such as a power plant, and its transport to a geological storage site where CO2 is sequestered. If implemented, CCS could allow fossil fu...
